Working sucks sometimes! If we’re honest, sometimes, we want to forget our responsibilities, curl up on the couch with a pint of Ben and Jerry's, and call it a day! However, working in a profession that is in high demand and high performance doesn’t always make that easy.
Navigating corporate America as a person of color should honestly be considered a superpower. Then throw in the rest of the balancing act by trying to maintain a social life, a job, family, and everything else that comes with “adulting”, it's easy to neglect your mental health. Unfortunately, in our community, mental health is not talked about enough, and when it is, many of us are shamed and silenced for sharing our struggles.
This is why it is so important to find a safe space where we can talk freely and without judgment about our struggles and getting the support we need. We support our patients, and we love it, but it can take a toll and be mentally and emotionally exhausting. However, the truth is that there are other factors that we face as communities of color in medical communities that aren’t nearly talked about enough. Sometimes, it’s our patient’s that make us feel small, questioning our titles when they see a person of color in charge of their care. Other times, it’s our peers or our seniors who throw out occasional microaggressions. No matter how difficult it is day in and day out, we persevere, because we love it and we know the significance of diversity in medical care is so important for the communities we serve.
While we’re willing to bet you’re an expert at the perfect intake, when was the last time you asked yourself the same questions you ask your patients? Ask yourself: When was the last time I slept 8 hours? What have I eaten today? Remember, you deserve the same level of excellent care you provide to your patients.
Watching some trashy reality TV or taking a nap can definitely help take the edge off stress for a bit. But let’s be real—sometimes we need more than that. That’s where a therapist can really make a difference. Focus on your mental health.
