Let’s be real here, many law firms have crazy expectations for attorneys to prove their dedication to the firm. Well, if it isn’t obvious, let’s discuss how toxic these expectations can be for your mental health.
We can all agree that a little healthy competition can be good for the mind. Inviting friends over for a game night and beating them in UNO is a fun way to start the night…or maybe quickly end it (depends on how competitive you are). However, I think we can all agree working at a law firm is a very different type of competition. No matter how intense the game of UNO is, I doubt anyone is stressed about the Draw 4 they got served 2 days later. But work, that can be another ball game. Work stress can have a way of affecting you every day, and that’s when you gotta pull the plug and say “enough”. You don’t have to prove yourself by overworking and reaching your limit. Neglecting your mental health will only affect your work in the long run.
We know when the pressure is on at work, it can be really hard to have that work-life balance. Which means it is on you to be aware of when you’re being stretched and be intentional about setting boundaries. Remember, no one is going to care and protect your mental health more than you!
Take time to reflect on if your job is overlapping with your personal life. And remember that you are capable and qualified to do your job, so you should not feel the need to constantly showcase your value.
